Magazines are an excessive medium, and therefore, not to be trusted. False
politics, dieting pressure and celebrity tabloids stack the shelves of our
grocery and drug stores, cramming the mind. They represent all that cannot be
trusted at the center of society. Yet that does not mean that there is only
trash printed on the glossy pages. In my humble but somewhat well magazine-read
opinion, when one is searching for a sophisticated and entertaining fashion
magazine, Elle is the best one on the market, or at least my personal
favorite.
It is sophisticated but fun, fashion savvy but realistic. It has educated
fashion knowledge, ins to all top designers, yet it expresses a down-to-earth
feel that makes it more accessible than Vogue, but still sitting much higher
than Glamour or Cosmopolitan.
I do not approve of magazines being substitutions for literature, but it
really has articles worth reading which discuss women in society today. It feeds
exotic flavors through jet-set reports in the Travel and Global Fashion
sections. Fresh fashion straight off the runway is made clear and open, from
pages of designer trends to artful photo spreads. The Beauty/Body/Health
division is not only packed with lists of new products, tips on makeup trends,
but it also contains introspective articles on modern waves of beauty technology
told first-hand by journalists.
As in all magazines, the cover hosts a celebrity photo, and an in-depth
interview article and fashion shoot starring that woman. Elle will also have
additional profiles on other figures in the fashion/Hollywood world, one each of
both male and female. The last page, in addition, is always a lunch-date
interview with a famous man in which he discusses his views on modern women.
Other in-every-issue categories include the month's calendar that shows random
and quirky events, historical facts, product, music tour and TV show launches,
movie releases, famous birthdays, show and exhibit openings in major cities and
other such festivities for nearly every day. The Must See/Hear/Read section
reviews new movies, music and books worth checking out. The Ask E. Jean advice
column most always contains amusing love life advice, and the horoscopes and
numerology forecasts of course can't be missed.
Elle magazine incorporates the fashion ideas
into life, and expresses lifestyles through fashion. Of course, it is a member
of the unnaturally long youth, pressure to lose weight world, but in comparison,
Elle steps above its peers and converses with women, encourages
self-love, with the help of maybe a new Luis Vuitton dress or two and an eyelash
makeover, and as is its motto, cherchez la femme, it seeks the woman.
Indeed, Elle is the modern savvy woman's fashion magazine.
